Getting Around Tulum Mexico. Should you rent a car or take taxi?
Perhaps you are asking yourself if travelers in Tulum Mexico should rent a car or not? Well, I just might be able to help with that! Mr. Right and I visited Playa Del Carmen for a day then headed down to Tulum where we spent six days and absolutely loved it. I was considering rent a car for the six days we were in Tulum and am so glad I didn’t. Check out my experience in Tulum ruins Mexico here after you are finished with this blog post.
Tulum is a small town right on the Caribbean sea and as you can imagine, it can be a little exhausting trying to find parking well all you want doing is enjoying the sound of the water right at the beach.
We ended up taking taxes for all our excursions. Check out our Coba Ruins adventure or click here to see my Playa Del Carmen adventure.
We met Dean Enrique at the busy Tulum beach strip as we were looking to get a taxi to drop us off to our hotel, Ahau Tulum and we became friends immediately. Dean is a well-known taxi driver in Tulum and we are so glad we met him. He such a great storyteller with a great sense of humor and accompanied with lots of energy.
Dean is always willing to share his local knowledge with you without you even having to ask. When I told him I wanted to go to a Cenot, he suggested we try the less crowded Cenotes, Multum Ha near Coba, Cenote Casa Tortuga and a local restaurant were the locals eat which is quite inexpensive.
So, if you are looking to hire a taxi from Cancun International Airport to Tulum or a taxi drive when you are in Tulum, I would highly recommend Dean. Here is contact information, tell him Irine referred you. I have asked him if it’s OK that I share his information and his okay with it. Taxi service; cell 984-125-5570, email, Dean_by2@hotmail.com. Another advantage of having Dean as your drive is that he has the credit card transaction machine so if you don’t have cash, you can pay with your credit card. Note that cash is highly recommended in Tulum Mexico.
Why I recommend Dean ?
Professional: He treated us with respect and was always on time, in fact he always arrived at the agreed location half an hour early just in case. Plus, it helps he has an SUV which has lots of leg room.
Knowledgeable: He speaks good English and you are able to communicate well. He generous when it comes to sharing his local knowledge and tips.
Good Drive: I don’t know about you but when am vacation I don’t want to spend my time seating in a car but I would rather be sipping something right on the beach. Dean is a great drive, by this I mean he drives fast, so you are assured on getting to your location on time. It took us 1 1/2 from Tulum to Cancun International Airport.
Another way of getting around Tulum is biking and walking.
ProTip: Bring a head lamp or have your phone flashlight turned on when you are walking at night in Tulum main beach strip. I highly recommend walking instead of biking at night.
