- Sunday Bruch at Sankara Hotel in Westlands
By far, Sankara is my go-to hotel whenever I’m spending the night in Nairobi, Kenya. After a long flight from Seattle Washington, the last thing I want to do is spend another minute in a car. Because of traffic, I usually plan to arrive early afternoon or late evening so I can skip the Nairobi jam, which as you might have heard, it can be pretty bad.
Typically I spend two days in Nairobi where I enjoy the hotel breakfast which is super amazing. PS: ask the chef to make you their fantastic waffles. Great, professional and friendly staff. If you get cold easily like me, be sure to ask for a seat that’s not close to the AC. We had Katie (Catherine) a few times and she was amazing, pass my hellos ☺
Sankara also has a roof top bar where you can enjoy a cold drink with friends and family. George, one of the staff, is super friendly. I’ve had a couple interactions with him and he is just a great guy. On my recent trip to Kenya, April 2018, we asked him to reserve a seat for us so we could enjoy a football match and he did. Super awesome.
2. K1 Flea Market
I’m a great supporter of local businesses and I appreciate local artists and their work.
I am willing to spend extra for quality work. If you’re looking for unique quality items for yourself or a friend, this would be the right place to spend your Sunday afternoon.
3. Maasai Market at the City Center – High Court Parking
A great place to buy hand crafted gifts and souvenirs for your friends and family. Just remember that you need to bargain and negotiate for every item you purchase here.
4. Do some shopping at Vivo Active Wear Store
This has become my ritual every time I arrive in Nairobi. Either on my first day or my second, I go to the IHub Mall in Karen or Tmall and I go shopping at VIVO active wear shop which is owned and operated by a Kenyan super woman, Wandia Gichuru. They have several shops around Kenya. So instead of me buying all my clothes from the USA,
I buy some items from VIVO.
5. Ride an Ostrich in Nairobi Kenya
About an hour from Nairobi is Kitengela, a town where you can ride an Ostrich. This is also another cool experience I enjoyed on my trip in Kenya in 2017. Be sure to follow my adventure, travel with lrine on my social media accounts #travelwithirine
